Virtual every set of standarts (AAAS, 1994 ; AAUW, 2000 ; NRC, 1996 ; NRC 1999) mandates teaching science and technology as inquiry. several recent reports have outlined the importance of inquiry and technology within the science curriculum. analyzing the TIMSS result, Schmidt, Raisen, Britton, Bianchi, & Wolfe (1997) charaterize the U.S. science curriculum as "a mile wide and an inch deep," with more topics covered than in most other nations, but less time devoted to making sense of science.
