The litature on de-industrialization suggest among other things that de-industrialization is not necessarily a symptom of the failure of a country's manufacturing sector. On the contrary, de-industrialization is simply the natural outcome of successful economic development and is usually associated with rising living standards. However this explanation shed little light on the phenomenon that occured in Indonesia recently. De-industrialization in Indonesia is result of shocks to the system such as a sudden dropped in investment, or declining productivity in the manufacturing sector.
