Isi artikelSouthwest Spanish (SWS), closely related to Mexican Spanish, is sometimes reported to aspirate and delete postnuclear /-s/ and sometimes prenuclear /s-/ as well, but there has been no study using sociolinguistic methodology to investigate to what extent this may happen. This study investigates /-s/ aspiration and deletion in the San Antonio dialect of SWS with 2,097 instances taken from interviews of ten local speakers. Analysis reveals a 97% retention of I -s/, suggesting that retention and not aspirationl deletion is the norm in this community. However, the patterning of I-sl deletion in estar 'to be' suggests lexicalized morphological variability (Le. esta, 'sta, and 'ta) rather than phonological. The possibility of other lexicalized variability regarding /s/ (e.g. in nosotros 'we') is discussed for SWS also in view of the fact that lexicalization of /s/ aspiration occurs in many popular dialects of Spanish worldwide.
