The incorporation of transition metal oxides into silica can give materials with useful optical, electronic or catalytic properties. Small additions of ZrO2 or TiO2, for example, are of interest due to its catalytic effect. It is shown that the addition of small amounts of Na2O into the silicate network weakens the silicate network by forming more lower Q(n) species.
