This study aims at identifying the problems encountered by the English Department Students of Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University. The subjects are the students taking the translation course at the even semester of the academic year 2001 - 2002. The study reveals that the subjects encountered the following problems in translating English text into indonesia : 1) comprehending English texts which contaion cultural content, 2) finding equivalent meaning of words or phrases related to cultural and scientific content unfamiliar to them and 3) restructuring equivalent meaning or message in the target language into the acceptable forms of texts in the target language.
