At the university level, students are expected to learn from textbooks. Textbooks consist of expository texts and often serve as a primary tool to gain valuabel information. On imoortant task in learning from textbook is to construct a mental representation of the relationships between the information in the text, with the aids of the text elements. Researches in the field of cognitive psychology have shown that one text elemnt that has a role in comprehending expository text is the text structure. One approach of studying text structures, especially in long expository texts that students encountered, suggests eight rethorical structures and a diagram for each structure, i.e list, topical net, matrix, hierarchy, linear string, branching tree, falling dominoes and spiral. From the cognitive processes perspective, representing text structures as diagrams have more advantages than using outlines. The advantages of diagramming are that it produces two kinds of coding in memory, relationship between information in a text are more imaginable, and could serve as a retrieval cue. All these can make reading and studying easier, therefore promoting skills in learning from textbooks.
