When cholelithiasis happens, a stone consisting of cholesterol persipitation is formed in the canaliculi biliary and the gallbladder. Cholesterol stone formation goes through three stages: (1) the formation of lithegenic bile, (2)nucleation, and (3) the stone growth. During these stages supersaturated biles and cholesterol crystals play an important role. Medication using bile acids had been fried in 1937, but later findings indicate that only chenodeoxycholic acid is found effective in producing the desaturation of the bile. The effect of litholytic chenodeoxycholic acid is known to work through the increase of bile acid pool and the decrease of the secretion of the cholesterol into bile.
