Isi artikelTo improve our understanding of the functional relations underlying mappassage learning, the effects of structural hierarchy on recall were examined. Specifically, two types of content were alternated within the structural framework of both a map and a passage in order to examine the effects of structurally congruent or incongruent hierarchies on passage recall. Although passage structure increased passage recall as expected, our findings revealed that recall for passage content was greatest when learners received the content in the top of both the map and passage structures. We reasoned that conjoint processing is facilitated when content is atop each referent's structural hierarchy, mainly because learners' verbal and spatial coding systems are tacitly guided to conspicuously placed information.
