The terminal voltage of an alternator changes with load, The consumer voltage must be maintained within pre spesificed limits. This demands that the machine be designed with low voltage regulation. However a low volateg regulated machine is uneconomical and is subjected to mechanical and electrical stress in the case of accidental short circuit. In most cases low voltage regulation is not necessary becasue automation voltage control is normally used to avoid voltage fluctuation with load, Voltage regulation is an important characterisitc of an elternator and it predetermination is essential for normal operation and for the design of excitation control schemes.
