Isi artikel
Candida albicans as a part of the normal oral flora can become pathogenic organism, in oral activity of healthy carrier, candida albicans can be found in low concentration. In denture wearers, Candida albicans can be isolated from denture base and denture bearing area. The aim of this epidemiological survey was to find out the differences in number of colonies of Candida albicans between the denture wearers compared to subjects without dentures. The clinical material was collected from oral swab of palatal mucosa (n = 175) which then was embedded into dextrose sabouroud agar medium. The result showed that there was no significant differences between the number of colonies on denture wearers compared to subjects without dentures (p = 0.0504 > alpha = 0.05), however there was a significant differences between the number of colonies of subjects with denture (p = 0.02 < alpha = 0.05). This study concluded that even though there was no significant differences between the number of colonies on the denture wearers and subjects without dentures, but the significant differences between the number of colonies of denture stomatitis patients and subjects without dentures suggested that Candida albicans must be considered as one of the factors which has an important role in the pathogenesis of denture stomatitis.
