The city of Semarang is located on the north coast of Central Java, facing the sea of Java. The topography of Semarang varies, the northern part (coastal area) is an alluvial platform, the central part is mountainous area, and the southern part is mountainous area. The flooding of Semarang in general is caused by : 1) local flooding , 2) floods originating from higher areas , and 3) tidal floods, which occurs daily and always distrubs people's activities. Flood prevention has been done since the Dutch colonial period, however it has never been able to overcome the problem of flooding in Semarang.
