For reasons of personal esthetics, many patients are highly concerned about the apperance of their teeth. Such patients will ignore the value of function and emphasisze the importance of apperance. The utopian restorative material is one that would be adhesive, permanently match the color of the remaining tooth, be biologically compatible with the tooth and soft tissue, be easily handled, and permanently mantain form and function of the tooth. Unfortunately, those requirements are not satisfied by any material available presently. Currently, resin system aret the materiald most used for tooth-colored restorations. The total process of placing succesful tooth-colored restorations is based in part upon a scientific background, but is also heavily based on subjective considerations on the part of the dentist.
