This discussion is based on the thought that phatic categories determine a great deal on the communication effect. In other words, the use of a phatic category in every speech will determine the intended meaning of a speaker. The interlocutor should also understand and feel the effect that the speaker intends. However, in reality some speakers do not understand the structure and meaning theoretically. It seems that in reality, meaning in terms of grammar makes a phatic category difficult to explore lexically. Therefore, the coherence of the speaker and interlocutor is determined by the similar contact they have. This condition matches the culture of Minangkabau society in which chitchat is necessary for socialization. Hence, this paper is an informative source for the study of phatic categories in Minangkabau language in terms of their forms, kinds, distributions, and meanings. The basic phenomenon of this discussion is that in Minangkabau language there are some phatic categories which vary in forms, kinds, functions, and meanings. The variety makes it different from other languages such as Indonesian and other languages iri Indonesia. Another phenomenon is that a phatic category has a determinative effect on communication. Therefore, a good interpretation will help the effort of structuring.
