There is a growing amount of research in language learning and general education that supports the idea that addressing in the fifth goal of the national standards-communication-in the language classroom can be an effective way of teaching the target language. In addition, situating foreign language education within the literal and metaphorical spaces of our communities serves to emphasize the relevance of foreign languages in the contemporary world. This article gives specific examples of how community-based learning (CBL) in the foreign language classroom addresses the issue of communicative competence.
