Isi artikelAfter World War II, education was one of the major problems faced by practically all the countries in Southeast Asia (as by other emerging or developing countries all~ over the world). The backwardness in the field of education was acutely felt, and these countries realized that a great deal had to be done in education if -they were to occupy a respectable position in the assembly of nations. Up to the end of the 1950s, the greatest efforts were concentrated on the expansion of the educational system. Many more schools of all types and at different levels were needed to provide the badly needed manpower with the necessary education and training for national development and nation building in these countries in their emergence from the isolation of backwardness and colonialism into the ever-widening horizons of the technological 20th century. This drive for quantity was remarkably successful, and the 1960s saw the beginning of serious efforts to improve the quality of education (including the Teaching of English as a Second or Foreign Language) and to establish an individual identity in all domains of national life (including education).
