Isi artikelAlthough poverty is generally recognized as a highly multidimensional phenomenon or process, in the Indonesian context, poverty has been mainly an agricultural or a rural phenomenon. Official data on the distribution of poor families by main occupations/income sources support this notion that in Indonesia poverty has a strong relationship with agricultural performance, as the vast majority of poor families in Indonesia are farmer owning only small plots of lands and agricultural workers. This paper highlights the importance of output/income growth in agriculture for poverty reduction in Indonesia. Specifically, this paper deals with two policy questions. First, do data from Indonesia support the notion that growth is good for the poor? Second, does growth in agriculture matter for poverty reduction? Through simple statistical analyses, the study shows that economic growth is positively correlated with poverty reduction, and, output or income growth in agriculture appears to have the strongest effect on poverty reduction than other sectors do. This finding supports the general notion in the literature that agricultural growth is vezy essential for poverty reduction.
