Public reports have become extremely influential in recent years in some scientific disciplines as well as in business, administrative and legal settings. The object of this article is to report on a study of interaction in public reports, and to assess how relations between participants in the communicative event give the text its distinctive shape. To characterize the discourse of public reports, a corpus was collected and surveyed. Subsequently, four public reports in the environmental sciences were selected for closer scrutiny, and a detailed study of the features of interaction in one of them was conducted. Findings are reported, results of the case study are exemplified and discussed, and theoretical and practical implications are commented upon.
