This paper is concerned with materials development in English for Science and Technology (EST), particularly for EFL students at the university level, with specific reference to the current EST situation in Taiwan. As in many parts of the world, EST teachers in Taiwan are confronted with decisions as they select or produce materials to fit a particular situation, a course, and specific learners. This paper discusses a number of these decisions: whether to select a published textbook or to innovate one's own materials, whether to adopt a content or a skills approach, whether materials should be process- or product-oriented, whether they should be authentic or simplified, and how they could be properly contextualized. Attempts are made to clarify the concepts involved and to suggest possible solutions to these problems. An eclectic attitude towards materials development is suggested.
