Isi artikelOver the years, ESP and EAP have accumulated a cluster of typical characteristics and normal practices. The aim of the present discussion is to emphasize the fragility of these by looking at a particular ESP course that is slightly unusual in four different ways. The discussion firstly considers whether there is such a thing as a characteristic ESP time pressure. Attention is then given to the treatment of "hard" terminology in EAP. The third topic is the non-linguistic subject matter of EAP courses, while the last is the use of literary texts in EAP. The course in question is a real ESP component of a British BA degree in European Business Administration. It has unusual features because it grew up in an unusual context. However, the trend in Europe towards greater international cooperation is producing more ESP courses of this type, and this will bring their unusual features more into the ESP mainstream.
