Isi artikelThe successful comprehension of a text depends on the activation of appropriate content schemata (background knowledge) and this in turn depends upon the reader's lexical knowledge. In addition to scientific words, the lexical knowledge of EST students must include subtechnical vocabulary - the words which express the relations which exist between the key scientific concepts. The study described in this article shows that Papua New Guinean (PNG) students are deficient in their knowledge of subtechnical vocabulary. It is suggested that prereading exercises and extensive reading are suitable ways in which to tackle the problem.
