Isi artikel
A qualitative study is described investigating the university graduate student seminar presentation as a speech event and its status as a genre. Observations of seminars in graduate departments of animal science and agronomy, and interviews with faculty and students involved provide the basis for the analysis. Findings support Swales' (1990) contention that the graduate seminar is an independent genre related to the experimental research article, not merely an oral replication. Discrepancies between professors' expressed genre expectations and non-native-speaking students' actual seminar presentations are noted and discussed. Options for ESP curriculum development in the area of oral research-process genres are offered.
