The study indicates the most important problems facing university students in using English for written communicative purposes and attempts to specify the main sources of these problems. It is suggested that these sources can be grouped into three main categories: problems at the sentence level, problems at the paragraph level and problems of content. The research has also confirmed that weakness in the writing skills in the foreign language is due to some extent to an original weakness in the mastery of Arabic writing skills.
