Isi artikel
The present study examined cross-sectional tongue shape and linguopalatal contact during [s], [n, [1], [i], [e], [0] and [0] in CVC utterances. Three cross-sectional scans of the tongue, anterior, dorsal and posterior, were made using ultrasound imaging. Linguopalatal contact patterns were determined from electropalatography data. Results indicated that cross-sectional tongue shape is very different among consonants, and at different anterior-to-posterior locations, indicating that the vocal tract is neither circular in shape, nor uniform along its length. These results are due to the anisotropic nature of the tongue's musculature. In addition, tongue surface shapes, and thus vocal tract shapes, were affected by the bracing of the tongue against the palate (during consonants). Cross-sectional tongue shapes varied due to the location of the contact and the speculated amount of force used in the contact.
