Many of the properties of a single-mode can be used to quickly generate various types of fiber sensors. The length and index refraction of this fiber will change when it is subjected to an environmental perturbation. Interferometric techniques may be used to sense these changes with accuracies that match or surpass those achieved with conventional sensors technology. Optical fibers are used to sense environmental effects in two distinct ways, i.e. extrinsinc and intrinsic sensing. The fiber may be used strictly as information carriers that lead up to black box to impress information on a light beam that propagates to aremote receiver through the same fiber. The second type of fiber sensor relies on the properties of the optical fiber itself to convert an environmental action into a modulation of the light beam passing through it. The typical single mode all-fiber interferometer is an intrinsically quiet device. Usually, most noise problems with these systems are due to perturbations of the fiber arms, causing unwanted phase shifts. This paper discussed the interferometric-based and phase modulation in optical fiber devices, the Mach-Zehnder and Michelson interferometric sensorss, which have important applications, and finally thermal affects to the sensing fiber.
