Isi artikel
This article describes the use of materials in the mother tongue in the teaching of literacy to an eighteen-year-old learner of ESL (English as a Second Language) from Chile. The process began with the use of materials in Spanish to provide a motivation to write. It then developed into amore systematic use of translation and other translation-related activities to extend the student's range of written expression. The article discusses work from Spanish into English and from English into Spanish, and also two distict styles of writing: a fairly formal, public-speaking style of considerable rhetorical complexity, and a less formal style. The article concludes that the development of a stylistic range in written English is assisted by this approach, but suggests that more work in thia area should be done, and across a broader range of languages.
