The Scientific English course for advanced students run by the Institut de Phonétique of the Free University of Brussels is open to science researchers throughout the university and to civil engineering students in thier two final years. The course includes practice in the use of spoken English in a variety of situations likely to be encountered by a scientist. These situations are simulated in the classroom or in the research labolatories used by the students. Unfotunately, the heterogeneous nature of the groups has meant that there is a lack of common research experiance, and this precludes one situation: the one where everyone is an 'expert' and where informed discussion can take place. The following describes a practical attempt to overcome this difficulty by the use of two logical problems.
