Isi artikel
This paper discusses several components of communicative competence in foreign language learning. Language is seen to be influenced by communicative goals and processes. Strategies learners resort to in expressing meanings influence the structure of their discourse. The need for learners to adopt conventional solutions to coding meanings is discussed, and the need for varient forms for performing speech acts. The effects of the interaction between the speaker, the listener, and the message are all seen to influence the communication process. Finally, implications for teaching are discussed.
