There are characteristic differences between a monolingual dictionary for foreign learnes and one for native speakers. One of these differences has been until very very recently the absence of any etymological informayion from dictionaries of the former type. The assumption that etymology has no pedagogical relevance is challenged in this article, which gives an idea of the principal types of etymology with some examples of each type, and assesses the potential practical value of such information.
