This article looks at five emphases associated with humanism in language teaching, as outlined by Stevick (1990). After referring to their cultural setting, it sets out some of the difficulties of using the emphases in a Japanese context, and the problem of what to count as 'right'. As a counter to these obstacles, a sixth emphasis, that of religious humanism, is added. This, it is contended, can be aroused but not taught. Interspersed with the discussion is an indication of the processes involved in the classroom application of what is termed basic, extended, and religious humanism. This is given through the eyes of two teachers, Stan and Avril. References are made to Buddhism and Christianity as they are taken to be representative, to a limited extent, of Japanese and Western belief systems. However the sixth emphasis of religious humanism embraces all the great belief systems.
