Until the beginning of the 1980s, research into the effect of sentence combining (SC) on overall writing ability had seemed to yield very favourable evidence. However, the subsequent emergence of contradictory findings raised questions about the potential role of SC in composition instruction. After reviewing the related research and the weaknesses of SC exercises employed in many ESL/EFL composition textbooks, this article proposes a modified version of traditional SC exercises. Called SC plus, this technique involves sentence combining, ordering these sentences into a meaningful text, and editing and revising the constructions initially used in the combining process. A sample activity is provided and discussed in detail. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of SC plus are examined critically and some recommendations are made.
