Successful training of counterparts to take over from expatriate specialists can make or break a project. Yet very little has been written on how to plan for success or how to develop a counterpart once he or she is appointed. This article is an attempt not only to pass on the authors' experience of counterparting but also to start a debate on how counterparting can best be achieved.
