Most language teachers recognize the value of using authentic materials for teaching and learning purposes. This article focuses on two major applications of authentic materials: developing learners' language skills, and orienting learners to the application of these skills in possible sub-sequent activities in the outside world. The writers describe their experiences in selecting and using authentic materials, and in designing and evaluating tasks that illustrate such applications at tertiary level.
