Isi artikel
This paper presents a procedure, based on research into listening and reading comprehension, that involves students in analysing and defending their interpretation of oral and written stories. This procedure extends students' range of interpretive strategies, developing their sensitivity to the differences between oral and written input, and their ability to balance top-down and bottom-up processing of both. More specifially, it enhances their ability to assess the demands of a text, exploit background shcemata, combine factual and inferential interpretation, and resive interpretation when desirable. Using group work, it helps students to interact productively and harmoniously, exploiting both agreemant and disagreement. Finally, it increases students' confidence and enjoyment in reading and listening to stories in English. The procedure is appropriate for both ESL and EFL, and for students of all ages and all proficiencies above absolute beginner. It is readily adapteble to student interest and teacher proficiency, and requires minimal equipment.
