Isi artikel
The present paper aims to systematize the tautological expressions in Colloquial Jordanian Arabic (CJA). It demonstrates that CJA has conventionalized a diverse network of tautologies to express a variety of language functions, such as admiring, condemning, showing tolerance, showing indifference, showing a fatalistic viewpoint, etc. The paper argues that tautologies belong to both semantics and pragmatics. On the one hand, they are amenable to systematization, because core significations can be abstracted from them, and thus, they should be treated on a par with other semantic and structural paradigms describing CJA. On the other hand, tautological expressions are context-dependent at the pragmatic level. In order to fully understand the machinery generating them, tautologies must be related to the context of situation where the pragmatic significations come into play. Consequently, approaches such as 'Radical Pragmatics' (Levinson and Brown 1987, Levinson 1983) and 'Radical Semantics' (Wierzbicka 1987) to the treatment of tautologies are given up in favor of the position in this paper.
