In this article, the authors argue that a successful class in literature should not merely confine itself to traditional classroom methodology in which students follow the teacher's cues. Instead, the instructor should enable the students to exercise their critical thinking skills in interpreting a text. By applying specific cognitive skills in a systematic manner when analyzing literary works, students learn not only to substantiate their interpretations through well-reasoned arguments but also to become aware of the reasoning process itself.
