Theoretical and empirical bases are presented in this paper for considering the situation of parents during the period after the children leave the family of orientation as an emergent and identifiable phase of the family cycle. The postparental period is found to be generally a satisfactory one for marital partners although problems arise in role-taking and adult socialization.
