Isi artikelAmerican poverty is still widespread, seriously affecting from one-fifth to two-fifths of our population. A socio-economic split continues to grow between the advantaged and disadvantaged; this split is associated with automation, sluggish economy, rural-urban migration, an expanded youth population, "gray area blight," problems related to urban-renewal and public-housing projects, and cultural maladaptation to urban, predominantly middle-class life. Professionals seeking to help culturally maladapted families can conspire with rather than direct them to develop new patterns for surmounting defeat, alienation, and despair. Experimental evidence suggests that the human potential can be significantly expanded. Parent education, imaginatively designed for low-income families, is one of the many services that may play a part in socioeconomic and individual change. Such services should be subjected to rigorous measurement and evaluation.
