This paper presents a study of technical lexical structures with the aim of assisting students in the task of processing and deciphering the lexicogrammatical realization of technology in specific engineering fields, in this case plastics. The analysis was carried out by classifying the different types of technical terms on the basis of their opposition to their vernacular meanings. The purpose of the analysis is to show that technical terminology does not only consist of technical terms and nomenclature, but that it is closely related to grammar; consequently, both technical lexis and grammar should be taught together. It also shows that, though much technical taxonomizing is a process of renaming an existing vernacular word, there is also a process of reordering the words into technical hierarchical taxonomies and, as a result, technical terminology has a field-creating function. The data for the analysis was processed in an expert software program with the aim of setting up a database of technical terms in five languages (English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian) both for teaching purposes and professional use.
