Much has been discussed lately about the growth of energy demand in the developing countries. The world development report of the world bank (1992) shows forecast of energy growth where the energy use in developing countries will outstrip those of the industrialized world before 2010 and continue to accelerate beyond that. This level of energy utilization presents problems for both economic development and the environment. The issue concerns the role energy plays in economic development and the development path that countries are following. What direction does the economic development track need to take ? For indonesia, since the first national development planning was implemented (pelita I there has not been a positively "link" between energy and economic development in an environmentally sound matters. In latest the world bank country report of indonesia (1993), it discusses how indonesian sustain the economic development and delink the economic growth, equity and the environment. The concept of sustainable development acknoweldges the importance of economic growth, but it differs from previous concepts of development in its recognition that natural / energy resources are infinite and that the wasteful use of resources today will cause an unecessary sacrifice of income and health in the future. This paper gives an overall view of energy demand and supply, and the environmental problems in indonesia, looking at the relationship of energy, the environment and economic development by examining a dual objective function energy - economic quantitative model, and set of policies for the pelita VI. The results indicate that these are some policy options available to improve efficiency use energy, both from the supply and demand side. The policy action firm the supply side would be to meet the energy requirements in the medium and long term. Such strategy would include the management of the resource availability, cost resources and the usage of energy efficiency technology. From the consumers point of view, the option should be through energy conservation program. The program will guideline energy development in the repelita VI to achieve the indonesia long term energy enery security which would ensure indonesia's sustained economic growth.
