Isi artikelIntensive Reading (IR) is an essential subject in China's college English curriculum. It takes the Chinese students through the text on a word-by-word and phrase-by-phrase basis with the aim of equipping the learners with both linguistic and communicative competence. A means of working with intensive reading is the 4-D approach which refers to a sequential system of dictation, discussion-discourse and deciphering used at the end of each lesson to review and intensify what has been learned previously. As a means of achieving both linguistic and communicative competence, the 4-D approach has the advantage of attending to one of the four skills without losing sight ofthe other three.
