Isi artikelMany years ago I spent two summers studying a foreign language, one at the Sorbonne in Paris, the other at a lakeside villa on an Italian lake. Some of what I learned then has faded but surprisingly prominent in my surviving memories now are the experiences with French and Italian literature and the feeling of immersion in the culture that these literatures provided. It's not just the poetry I can still recite but the rich associations that come with the words of these languages. Language textbook dialogues cannot be expected to replicate such richness. Why is it that so many learners of English, even the advanced ones, are denied this entree into the culture of the language they are studying? What are the reasons for the current neglect of this important vehicle of the culture of the target language and how can we justify the reintroduction of literature into the language curriculum? These are the issues that I will explore in this article.
