Isi artikelFluidized bed drying is a drying system conducted by contacting drying medium with material in fluidization state. The most common drying medium used is hot air. Drying by fluidization state. The most common drying medium used is hot air. Drying by fluidization can be operated in two different ways, batch and continuous manner. This paper presenting the research resulting from experiment operating in batch manner. In this type of drying, like as comonly drying process, there are two different drying periods, the constant rate periode and the falling rate periode. In the first periode the process was controlled by heat transfer mechnaism, while in the later the process was controlled by mass transfer mechanism. In the constant rate periode equilibrium state is fastly reached, both for heat as well as mass transfer equilibrium, so the exit solid and air is near adiabatic saturation of incoming air. The constant rate periode will continue until the critical moisture content of material was reached. While in the falling rate periode the diffusion rate of moisture to the material surface is very slow, then this mechanism is controlling the overall rate of drying process. This research is aimed to learn the influence of different minimum bed height- superficial velocity ratio to the fluidized bed drying characteristic. During the experiment the moisture content of the material was measured every certain time interval. The experiment was stopped when the temperature of exit gas was not change with time. The result of this study show that the higher bed height - supervicial velocity ratio result in the lower rate of drying. The obtained dyring curve also indicate the presence of constant rate as well as falling rate periode.
