The long-time-average spectrum provides information on the spectral distribution of the speech signal over a period of time. Such spectra, can be used for studies of the human voice. The present paper discusses some aspects of long-time-average spectra and their usefulness in clinical applications. These aspects include acoustic variability within and between normal voices as well as acoustic differences between normal and pathological voices. It is suggested that long-time-average spectra are of limited use for screening purposes but can be useful for documenting changes within a given voice.
