Isi artikel
Comprehending academic lectures has long been a problem for ESL students. An approach to this problem based on "lexical phrases," chunks of language of varying length, offers a promising new solution. This study examines the lexical phrases that occur in several representative academic lectures and categorizes them in terms of the "macromarker" discourse functions they perform. It then suggests ways of teaching such lexical phrases and functional categories to enhance students' ability to comprehend lectures, principally by teaching them to predict what type of information is coming up next and to organize and interpret the flow of information more easily.
