Isi artikel
The phonetic and acoustic correlates of perceived accent change in a group of 10 Vietnamese immigrant schoolchildren acquiring Australian English are investigated. Of four vocalic nuclei, /ai/, /ei/, Ii/, /u/, which have characteristic vowel qualities in Australian English (AE) and which mark sociolectal variation within the speech community, two, /u/ and fail, underwent significant change. Movement of the children's Bark-scaled FI-F2 formant trajectories in the direction of AE targets was strongly related to the degree of perceived accent change. The latter was derived from perceptual judgements of native listeners who were non-expert but had some training in phonetics and the description of Australian English. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relative salience of vowel quality feature changes and their corresponding formant trajectory shifts. Certain consonantal features, typical of Vietnamese English, also influenced the measure of accent change.
