Isi artikelIt has been observed that fundamental frequency changes during the vowel segment of a synthesised monosyllabic word such as "yes" may cause the word to be perceived as bisyllabic. This phenomenon occurs even though the intensity and spectrum of the vowel remain constant. Experiments have shown that the bisyllabic percept is brought about by a non-final fall-rise intonation contour, provided that the following this are sufficienctly long. The duration of the segment containing the fall appears to be of no consequence.
