Some vowels are universally more favored than others. Among the rarest vowels is /A/. Data analysed for three varieties of English reveal great variation in /A/. Results for Received Pronunciation, Modified Northern and West Coast American English indicate that /A/ is not consistently robust as a contrastive sound. Influential variables include geographical latitude, social prestige and speaker sex. /A/ is examined in other varieties and languages, and shown to be absent, collapsed with another vowel, or as having disappeared. Acoustic analyses, phonological inventories and historical patterns are explored for explanations relating to /A/ and language change. Auditory theory enables hypotheses to be made concerning the psychoacoustic distinctiveness of /A/. A sociophonetic influence also needs to be accounted for. The discussion provides input into theories of vowel symmetry and dispersion; universal theories of phonetic preference and viability are also called into question with inferences made from the psychoacoustic standpoint.
