Isi artikelIn identification experiments on words and short CV segments excised from conversational speech, we show that local phonetic variables, notably sentence accent and the phonetic and phonological properties of individual segments, exert a greater influence on intelligibility than whether or not the word has been used before in the conversation. These phonetic influences are stronger in the segment identification task than in the word identification task, consistent with the fact that word recognition makes use of a wider range of phonetic, lexical and contextual information than that relevant to isolated segments. These results are interpreted in a framework for speech perception and word recognition in which lexical items are represented in terms of phonetic features with associated probability levels. The probability levels are affected both by the analysis of the sensory input and by lexical and contextual information.
