More developmental research is needed

The target papers in this special issue represent the "state of the art" in research on phonetic development. However, one limitation of this research is that the primary theoretical and empircal focus is on infancy, and thus our understanding of development beyond this period seems likely to remain sketchy . Given current research strategies, a second limitation is that the goal of understanding the relation between structural and functional aspects of the language acquisition task is unlikely to be met. In view of these limitations, my suggestion is that more developmental research is needed.
