Isi artikelThe processing of speech in the auditory periphery relies upon a series of complex physiological mechanisms to transform the speech signal into a pattern of neural impulses distributed across a to no topically organized array of auditory-nerve fibers. Because the auditory nerve is the sole conduit for the transmission of acoustic information into the central nervous system, it serves to delimit the representational form of complex sounds at more central stations of the auditory pathway. A detailed understanding of the representation of the speech signal at this peripheral level will provide important clues concerning speech coding in the central auditory pathway. The physiological and anatomical substrates of this peripheral processing are reviewed and discussed in relation to their signal processing functions.
